With everything from the most liberal of arts to the most serious of sciences being taught in baccalaureate degrees, it feels like there is a degree for just about everything. Even little known majors or needed majors, such as art history and philosophy, can compel someone to ask the question “what do you do with a degree in that?” And there are even lesser known degrees than these that are available to students who have a true passion for what they study or those who study what isn’t even widely known.

In order to demonstrate this, we have researched 15 college degrees you may not know exist below. They include everything from preparing a delectable dessert to seeing the future in the stars.

College Degrees You May Not Know Exist but Love Anyway

If you love these rare and unusual jobs, why not learn more about a college degree in it?

  1. Winemaking
    If you love drinking and sampling wines, there is a degree for you. Not only thought to be offered in the Napa Valley and surrounding areas, there are other colleges offering this degree. In fact, the practice is so recognized, Cornell University has created a special winemaking degree for undergraduates.
  2. Beer Brewing
    For those who like to do their drinking with their pinky finger down, there are degrees available in brewing. Just this year, Appalachian State University began pursuing efforts to establish a university-run brewery and academic program in fermentation science for students. They will learn the science and art of brewing in order to get jobs at distilleries, breweries, and even vineyards.
  3. Pastry
    Who doesn’t love a baked goodie every now and then? This cooking degree actually focuses on baking, specifically pastries. This specific school offers both a certificate and associates degree in the cooking art. Advanced classes include cake formula and assembly, cake decorating and even tempering chocolate.
  4. Golf
    We may have heard of students going to school on a golf scholarship, but did you know there is actually a degree in golfing? This one offered by Ferris State University in Michigan teaches golf course management as a major. Before you dismiss this degree you may not have heard of, they also have an internship program in which students work in a facility with a PGA certified professional.
  5. Bowling
    When one thinks “bowling,” they often associate it with beloved characters such as Archie Bunker and Homer Simpson who make their bowling team the subject of this week’s adventure. However, for those who truly love bowling, there is this degree offered by Vincennes University in Indiana. It teaches everything you need to know about managing your own bowling business and includes such classes as Lane & Pinsetter Maintenance, Pro Shop Operations, and even First Aid.
  6. Comic Book Art
    Are you one of those kids who had a huge comic book collection and could recount your favorite issues by heart? There’s a degree for that. Several, in fact. Any degree in design can be a starting point for comic book artists, but this program from Academy of Art University in San Francisco offers an illustration degree with several classes on how to draw comic book art.
  7. Flowers
    Although arranging flowers can be an art, there is actually formal training in the field. The American Institute of Floral Designers has chapters in 13 colleges and universities throughout the United States that offer accreditation in floral design. In addition, students can earn a floral degree through a community college or vocational school.
  8. Pop Culture
    Do you know everything about popular culture from the latest “American Idol” stats to the history of The Oscars? Then check out a degree such as the ones from the Department of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. They offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees on the subject and include courses such as Pop Culture Theory and Methodology as well as Folklore and Folklife.

College Degrees You May Not Know Exist and are a Thing

You may or may not have heard of the subjects taught in these degrees, but there are colleges that offer them.

  1. Astrology
    Not to be confused with astronomy, or the science of the stars, astrology is associated with horoscopes, card reading, etc. The Kepler College in Washington specializes in teaching their students many different practices in astrology. With both associate’s and bachelor’s degrees available, students can study astrology in various styles from Hellenistic Greece to Western Medieval.
  2. Astrobiology
    Less commonly known than the above, this is an actual NASA accredited science. It is the study of life throughout the universe, including the stars and beyond. Although NASA itself has a special area of astrobiology, the common degree path for a career here is to take a degree in one of the more traditional scientific paths and get a specialization in astrobiology.
  3. Sports Ministry
    This college degree combines teaching sports with teaching the word of God into one degree. Graduates go onto become recreation directors at churches or sports evangelists. Even those going into seminary studies can pursue this degree as a stepping stone.
  4. Aromatherapy
    Can the cure or treatment for a disease be a scented candle? Find out in this certificate program from the American College of Healthcare Sciences. Graduates earn certificates in aromatherapy and are able to use herbs and essential oils to manufacture natural products Many programs are offered online and include the science behind aromatherapy and even items such as aromatherapy massage.
  5. Herbology
    With legalization laws surrounding a certain herb, this degree may be better known in the future. For the present, those studying to become herbalists, or those who use herbs as medicine, can learn more about a degree in herbology like this one offered by the East West School of Planetary Herbology. There are several classes to take, such as Anatomy and Physiology, along with 400 minimum clinical hours that are required to earn the degree.
  6. Organic Agriculture
    In the future, this might be required learning for anyone looking to get a degree in agriculture. But for those who think the organic craze may just be a fad, this is one college degree you might not know exists. Washington State University offers a major in organic agriculture systems and allows students to work on their own certified organic farm as part of their studies.
  7. Medical Clowning
    Remember the movie “Patch Adams” where Robin Williams stars as one of those clowns who go from room to room in hospitals to cheer up patients? This actually isn’t a Hollywood fabrication and there is even an academic program that teaches it. The University of Haifa in Israel offers the dual major degree which teaches therapy – including nursing, developmental psychology, and the history of medicine – as well as theatrical skills that are necessary for clowning, such as comedy acting, improvisation, street theatre, and juggling.

And there are many other strange degrees not listed in the above 15 college degrees you may not know exist. With future trends driving everything right down to how we study, what we study is likely to change as well.
