Potential Financial Aid Opportunities for Online Baccalaureate Degree Students

As a baccalaureate degree student, you might find it difficult to pay the high tuition costs found at most schools. Luckily, there are tons of financial aid opportunities available to help you earn your bachelor’s degree. If you’re an undergraduate student, no tuition bill should stop you from going to school.

Types of Financial Aid

The two main types of financial aid are scholarships and grants. In both cases, the money you’ll receive doesn’t have to be repaid, as is the case with a student loan. The main difference between these two types of financial aid is that scholarships are given to students based on merit and grants are given to students based on financial need. Many undergraduates apply for (and receive) both.

Where to Find Financial Aid

The most common place for baccalaureate students to find financial aid is directly from their colleges. Almost all schools offer scholarships for top students and grants for students in need. You can also find them from the government. The federal government provides the Pell Grant, for example, which is money available to all students to fill out the FAFSA form and financially qualify. Lastly, look to outside organizations, groups, and companies to find financial aid. Many provide student with scholarships and grants based on program of study, so start your search with professional organizations within your prospective career field. Others, such as the scouts, provide financial aid for all students, regardless of major, though these funds are typically more competitive.

Earning Financial Aid

To be awarded scholarships and grants, you need to submit an application, typically which shows that you’ve been accepted to an accredited undergraduate program. In addition, at the bachelor’s degree level, many funds require applicants to submit and essay based on a topic such as career goals or leadership. When applying for scholarships and grants, keep the following in mind:

  • Read the directions carefully to make sure you follow each one completely.
  • Be sure to submit before the deadline – most won’t consider even the best applications if they are late.
  • Ask a trusted friend or teacher to read over your submission to check for errors.
  • Apply to as many as possible.
  • When you enter college, keep your grades up – if you do, many forms of financial aid can be renewed every year.
